mostawfulpassionswillbeletlooseanditwillbeanilldayforourcountryNowfriendswhatwewhoareinthismovementareendeavoringtodoisforestallanysuchmovementforjusticenowamovementinwhichweaskalljustmenofgenerousheartstojoinwiththemenwhofeelintheirsoulsthatliftupwardwhichbidsthemrefusetobesatisfiedthemselveswhiletheircountrymenandcountrywomensufferfromavoidablemiseryNowfriendswhatweProgressivesaretryingtodoistoenrollrichorpoorwhatevertheirsocialorindustrialpositiontostandtogetherforthemostelementaryrightsofgoodcitizenshipthoseelementaryrightswhicharethefoundationofgoodcitizenshipinthisgreatRepublicofoursAtthispointarenewedeffortwasmadetopersuadeMrRoosevelttoconcludehisspeechMyfriendsarealittlemorenervousthanIamDontyouwasteanysympathyonmeIhavehadanA1timeinlifeandIamhavingitnowIneverinmylifewasinanymovementinwhichIwasabletoservewithsuchwholehearteddevotionasinthisinwhichIwasabletofeelasIdointhisthatcommonwealIhavefoughtforthegoodofourcommoncountryAndnowfriendsIshallhavetocutshortmuchofthatspeechthatImeanttogiveyoubutIwanttotouchonjusttwoorthreepointsInthefirstplacespeakingtoyouhereinMilwaukeeIwishtosaythattheProgressivepartyismakingitsappealstoallourfellowcitizenswithoutanyregardtotheircreedortotheirbirthplaceWedonotregardasessentialthewayinwhichamanworshipshisGodorasbeingaffectedbywherehewasbornWeregarditasamatterofspiritandpurposeInNewYorkwhileIwaspolicecommissionerthetwomenfromwhomIgotthemostassistancewereJacobRiiswhowasborninDenmarkandArthurvonBriesenwhowasborninGermanybothofthemasfineexamplesofthebestandhighestAmericancitizenshipasyoucouldfindinanypartofthiscountryIhavejustbeenintroducedbyoneofyourownmenhereHenryCochemsHisgrandfatherhisfatherandthatfatherssevenbrothersallservedintheUnitedStatesarmyandtheyentereditfouryearsaftertheyhadcometothiscountryfromGermanyTwoofthemlefttheirlivesspenttheirlivesonthefieldofbattleIamallrightIamalittlesoreAnybodyhasarighttobesorewithabulletinhimYouwouldfindthatifIwasinbattlenowIwouldbeleadingmymenjustthesameJustthesamewayIamgoingtomakethisspeechAtonetimeIpromotedfivemenforgallantryonthefieldofbattleAfterwardinmakingsomeinquiriesaboutthemIfoundthattwoofthemwereProtestantstwoCatholicandoneaJewOneProtestantcamefromGermanyandonewasborninIrelandIdidnotpromotethembecauseoftheirreligionItjusthappenedthatwayIfallfiveofthemhadbeenJewsIwouldhavepromotedthemorifallfiveofthemhadbeenProtestantsIwouldhavepromotedthemoriftheyhadbeenCatholicsInthatregimentIhadamanborninItalywhodistinguishedhimselfbygallantrytherewasanotheryoungfellowasonofPolishparentsandanotherwhocameherewhenhewasachildfromBohemiawholikewisedistinguishedthemselvesandfriendsIassureyouthatIwasincapableofconsideringanyquestionwhateverbuttheworthofeachindividualasafightingmanIfhewasagoodfightingmanthenIsawthatUncleSamgotthebenefitofitThatisallImakethesameappealtoourcitizenshipIaskinourciviclifethatweinthesamewaypayheedonlytothemansqualityofcitizenshiptorepudiateastheworstenemythatwecanhavewhoevertriestogetustodiscriminatefororagainstanymanbecauseofhiscreedorbirthplaceNowfriendsinthesamewayIwantoutpeopletostandbyoneanotherwithoutregardtodifferencesorclassoroccupationIhavealwaysstoodbylaborunionsIamgoingtomakeoneomissiontonightIhavepreparedmyspeechbecauseMrWilsonhadseenfittoattackmebyshowinguphisrecordincomparisonwithmineButIamnotgoingtodothattonightIamgoingtosimplyspeakofwhatImyselfhavedoneandwhatIthinkoughttobedoneinthiscountryofoursItisessentialthathereshouldbeorganizationsoflaborThisisaneraoforganizationCapitalorganizesandthereforelabormustorganizeMyappealfororganizedlaboristwofoldtotheoutsiderandthecapitalistImakemyappealtotreatthelaborerfairlytorecognizethefactthathemustorganizethattheremustbesuchorganizationthatthelaboringmanmustorganizeforhisownprotectionandthatitisthedutyoftherestofustohelphimandnothinderhiminorganizingThatisonehalfappealthatImakeNowtheotherhalfistothelabormanhimselfMyappealtohimistorememberthatashewantsjusticesohemustdojusticeIwanteverylabormaneverylaborleadereveryorganizedunionmantotaketheleadindenouncingdisorderandindenouncingtheincitingofriotthatinthiscountryweshallproceedundertheprotectionofourlawsandwithallrespecttothelawsIwantthelabormentofeelintheirturnthatexactlyasjusticemustbedonethemsotheymustdojusticeTheymustbeartheirdutyascitizenstheirdutytothisgreatcountryofoursandthattheymustnotrestcontentunlesstheydothatdutytothefullestdegreeIknowthesedoctorswhentheygetholdofmewillneverletmegobackandtherearejustafewmorethingsthatIwanttosaytoyouAndhereIhavegottomakeonecomparisonbetweenMrWilsonandmyselfsimplybecausehehasinviteditandIcannotshrinkfromitMrWilsonhasseenfittoattackmetosaythatIdidnotdomuchagainstthetrustswhenIwasPresidentIhavegottwoanswerstomaketothatInthefirstplacewhatIdidandthenIwanttocomparewhatIdidwhenIwasPresidentwithwhatMrWilsondidnotdowhenhewasgovernorWhenItooktheofficetheantitrustlawwaspracticallyadeadletterandtheinterstatecommercelawinaspooraconditionIhadtorevivebothlawsIdidIenforcedbothItwillbeeasyenoughtodonowwhatIdidthenbutthereasonthatitiseasynowisbecauseIdiditwhenitwashardNobodywasdoinganythingIfoundspeedilythattheinterstatecommercelawbybeingmadeperfectcouldbemadeamostusefulinstrumentforhelpingsolvesomeofourindustrialproblemsSowiththeantitrustlawIspeedilyfoundoutthatalmosttheonlypositivegoodachievedbysuchasuccessfullawsuitastheNorthernSecuritiessuitforinstancewasinestablishingtheprinciplethatthegovernmentwassupremeoverthebigcorporationbutbyitselfthatthelawdidnotaccomplishanyofthethingsthatweoughttohaveaccomplishedandsoIbegantofightfortheamendmentofthelawalongthelinesoftheinterstatecommercelawandnowweproposeweProgressivestoestablishandinterstatecommissionhavingthesamepoweroverindustrialconcernsthattheInterstateCommerceCommissionhasoverrailroadssothatwheneverthereisinthefutureadecisionrenderedinsuchimportantmattersastherecentsuitsagainsttheStandardOilthesugarnonotthatTobaccoTobaccoTrustwewillhaveacommissionwhichwillseethatthedecreeofthecourtisreallymadeeffectivethatitisnotmadeamerelynominaldecreeOuropponentshavesaidthatweintendtolegalizemonopolyNonsenseTheyhavelegalizedmonopolyAtthismomenttheStandardOilandTobaccoTrustmonopoliesarelegalizedtheyarebeingcarriedonunderthedecreeoftheSupremeCourtOurproposalisreallytobreakupmonopolyOurproposalistolaydowncertainrequirementsandthentorequirethecommercecommissiontheindustrialcommissiontoseethatthetrustsliveuptothoserequirementsOuropponentshavespokenasifweweregoingtoletthecommissiondeclarewhatthoserequirementsshouldbeNotatallWearegoingtoputtherequirementsinthelawandthenseethatthecommissionrequiresthemtoobeythatlawAndnowfriendsasMrWilsonhasinvitedthecomparisonIonlywanttosaythisMrWilsonhassaidthattheStatesaretheproperauthoritiestodealwiththetrustsWellabouteightypercentofthetrustsareorganizedinNewJerseyTheStandardOiltheTobaccotheSugartheBeefallthosetrustsareorganizedinthestateofNewJerseyandthelawsofNewJerseysaythattheircharterscanatanytimebeamendedorrepealediftheymisbehavethemselvesandgivethegovernmentamplepowertoactaboutthoselawsandMrWilsonhasbeengovernorayearandninemonthsandhehasnotopenedhislipsThechapterdescribingwhatMrWilsonhasdoneabouttrustsinNewJerseywouldreadpreciselylikeachapterdescribingsnakesinIrelandwhichranTherearenosnakesinIrelandMrWilsonhasdonepreciselyandexactlynothingaboutthetrustsItellyouandItoldyouatthebeginningIdonotsayanythingonthestumpthatIdonotbelieveIdonotsayanythingIdonotknowLetanyofMrWilsonsfriendsonTuesdaypointoutonethingorletMrWilsonpointoutonethingthathehasdoneaboutthetrustsasgovernorofNewJerseyAndnowfriendsthereisonethingIwanttosayespeciallytoyoupeoplehereinWisconsinAllthatIhavesaidsofariswhatIwouldsayinanypartoftheUnionIhaveapeculiarrighttoaskthatinthisgreatcontestyoumenandwomenofWisconsinshallstandwithusYouhavetakentheleadinprogressivemovementshereinWisconsinYouhavetaughttherestofustolooktoyouforinspirationandleadershipNowfriendsyouhavemadethatmovementherelocallyYouwillbeingdoingadreadfulinjusticetoyourselvesyouwillbedoingadreadfulinjusticetotherestofusthroughouttheUnionifyoufailtostandwithusnowthatwearemakingthisnationalmovementWhatIamabouttosaynowIwantyotounderstandIfIspeakofMrWilsonIspeakwithnomindofbitternessImerelywanttodiscussthedifferenceofpolicybetweentheProgressiveandtheDemocraticpartyandtoaskyoutothinkforyourselveswhichpartyyouwillfollowIwillsaythatfriendsbecausetheRepublicanpartyisbeatenNobodyneedstohaveanyideathatanythingcanbedonewiththeRepublicanpartyWhentheRepublicanpartynottheRepublicanpartywhenthebossesincontroloftheRepublicanpartytheBarnesesandPenroseslastJunestolethenominationandwreckedtheRepublicanpartyforgoodandallIwanttopointouttoyouthatnominallytheystolethatnominationfrommebutitwasreallyfromyouTheydidnotlikemeandthelongertheylivethelesscausetheywillhavetolikemeButwhiletheydontlikemetheydreadyouYouarethepeoplethattheydreadTheydreadthepeoplethemselvesandthosebossesandthebigspecialinterestsbehindthemmadeuptheirmindthattheywouldratherseetheRepublicanpartywreckedthanseeitcomeunderthecontrolofthepeoplethemselvesSoIamnotdealingwiththeRepublicanpartyThereareonlytwowaysyoucanvotethisyearYoucanbeprogressiveorreactionaryWhetheryouvoteRepublicanorDemocraticitdoesnotmakeadifferenceyouarevotingreactionaryNowtheDemocraticpartyinitsplatformandthroughtheutterancesofMrWilsonhasdistinctlycommitteditselftotheoldflintlockmuzzleloadeddoctrineofStatesrightsandIhavesaiddistinctlyweareforpeoplesrightsWearefortherightsofthepeopleIftheycanbeobtainedbestthroughNationalGovernmentthenwearefornationalrightsWeareforpeoplesrightshoweveritisnecessarytosecurethemMrWilsonhasmadealongessayagainstSenatorBeveridgesbilltoabolishchildlaborItisthesamekindofargumentthatwouldbemadeagainstourbilltoprohibitwomenfromworkingmorethaneighthoursadayinindustryItisthesamekindofargumentthatwouldhavetobemadeifitistrueitwouldapplyequallyagainstourproposaltoinsistthatincontinuousindustriesthereshallbebylawonedaysrestinsevenandthreeshifteighthourdayYouhavelaborlawshereinWisconsinandchamberofcommercewilltellyouthatbecauseofthatfactthereareindustriesthatwillnotcometoWisconsinTheyprefertostayoutsidewheretheycanworkchildrenoftenderyearswheretheycanworkwomenfourteenand
